Single Deck Blackjack Strategy Table

Basic Blackjack
Strategy

Basic blackjack strategy. The single most important thing that you need to understand about the game of blackjack is that it is a game of player decisions. Unlike any other game in the casino, when playing blackjack your decisions can have an outcome on how the hand plays out and thus can contribute to the wins or losses of the players at the table. For example, the following blackjack table shows the effect that the number of decks has on the house edge against a basic strategy player with H17 and DAS. (These are Total-Dependent house edges.) Notice that as the number of decks increases, the house edge increases incrementally up to 0.64% for an eight-deck game.

Here's a little something I picked up a long time ago and thought you might find useful.
There was a book published some twenty years or more ago, called 'Beat The Dealer' by
a Dr. Thorp, who systematically played some 100 million blackjack hands using computers
(obviously). From his results, he published the following tables in his book which lay out the
proper basic strategies for playing blackjack hands. This is pure math now...

Of course be advised that I make no claim other than what what is stated here.
I don't even enjoy playing blackjack (I find craps and poker more fun and profitable)...
nor do I endorse gambling...please...it's all mathematics to me...

  • Players stand a higher chance of winning in single-deck games due to a lower house advantage than on multi-deck games. In the early days of casinos, single deck blackjack was the standard used by all casinos. Most players at the time knew how easy it was to win at single-deck blackjack card games due to its low house edge.
  • So, let’s take a look at blackjack strategies for single-deck games. The Basic Strategy for Blackjack Single Deck Games. Let’s start off with the blackjack basic strategy for single-deck games. We have two single deck blackjack strategy charts for you: one is for when the dealer hits on soft 17, and the other is when he stands.
  • Appendix 3c:Composition dependent exceptions to single deck basic strategy where the dealer hits a soft 17. Appendix 4:Details on the standard deviation in blackjack. Appendix 5:Infinite deck expected return according to player hand and dealer up card.

The top table is for single deck blackjack (harder to find but still present in Las Vegas
and Atlantic City) and the bottom table is for double deck blackjack (more common).

The legend for both tables is quite simple:

H = Hit S = Stay D = Double Down P = Split

Keep in mind that these are the basic strategies. There are adjustments
that need to be made to these plays depending on the particular house
rule variations and upon the leanness or richness of certain card types
remaining in the deck (for those card counters out there).

Enjoy and good luck; if you ever make a ton of money using this,
send me a postcard from the casino!
